Jefferson Lid Project Meeting Tonight

From Bill Farmer, Friends of Athletic Fields

Dear Athletic Field Supporters –

There are a few events coming up that you should be aware of. More info below. Most importantly, especially for southeast Seattle folks, is the public outreach meeting on the Jefferson Park Reservoir Lid project next Tuesday, April 21st. This meeting is to provide an update on current construction and to gather input for “Phase 2” projects. Magnuson Park SpringFest on Saturday, April 25th includes a dedication for the opening of 3 new lit synthetic rectangular fields (baseball fields will be completed this fall). Rugby, soccer and ultimate games will be demonstrated with the Mayor and other officials showing up around 12:15 at the fields. Public meetings on the new Parks & Green Spaces Levy will be conducted at four sites during May. Start thinking about Opportunity Fund ($15M) projects for your neighborhood.

Jefferson Park Expansion Project
Community Update and Outreach Meeting
Tuesday, April 21, 2009, 6:30 - 7:45
Beacon Hill Branch Library, 2821 Beacon Ave S

Active recreation supporters should try to make this meeting on the Jefferson Park Expansion Project to remind the Parks & Recreation Department of the sportsfields that were included in the Master Plan. Many years of public process were conducted by Seattle Parks and recent changes have eliminated or reduced many of the active recreation components. DPR’s plans are to eliminate synthetic turf with no improvements for the baseball diamond or the running track that were promoted during the public process. Given Seattle Public Utilities’ restrictions on watering and fertilizing natural grass on top of the reservoir lids, the ability of natural grass at this site to withstand more intensive athletic use is very uncertain.

Beacon Hill lacks playfields and these fields were being counted on to meet some of the increasing demand for fields space in the neighborhood. Synthetic turf allows for year-round play while natural grass is shut down for at least 4 months out of the year. Funding for this project was increased with passage of the new Parks & Green Spaces Levy with active recreation support. Let Seattle Parks know that you support the design that was agreed upon during the planning public process.
