Second VB Coaches Meeting Rescheduled

The Volleyball Coaches meeting originally scheduled on February 17th (Ash Wednesday) has been rescheduled to Tuesday, February 16th in the same room, the Isaac Orr Conference Room at the Chancery (910 Marion St. Seattle, WA). The meeting will go from 7:00-8:00pm and will be followed by a Play Like A Champion Today coaches training from 8:00-11:00pm in Isaac Orr.

Please remember that each team is required to have a coach representative come to a coaches meeting (either the meeting at 7:00pm February 9th or this one on February 16th). The head coach will be suspended for a game for any team not represented at a meeting, and teams in 6th-8th grade will also receive a forfeit "Loss" for that game, even though the teams can still play, with another coach for that one game.

All returning CYO coaches (either having coached volleyball in the past or any other CYO sport) must have completed the Play Like A Champion Today coaches training prior to the start of volleyball, and trainings will follow both coaches meetings, on Feb. 9th and 16th. These, however, will be the last trainings offered prior to the start of volleyball.

Coaches Need to Bring the Following to Playoff Games

Basketball Coaches - please remember to bring the following to EVERY playoff game:

1) Pregame Prayer - bring enough copies for all your players to share and read.

2) Roster - bring a copy of your roster, ideally showing all your jersey numbers and listing the players in numerical order.

3) Playoff Roster Eligibility Verification Form - this form should also list the players, with jersey numbers included, in numerical order. Please list every eligible player on your official roster, and inform the CYO Commissioner or Staff on site if any of the players listed are not at the game so we know to expect them in the next game or not.

All three of these can be found on the "Coaches" page on our website.

Please also be reminded, our commissioners and staff are at games to see that the pre-game prayer is being said, and that every child is receiving the proper playing time. They are not there to officiate the game, and should certainly not be confronted in an effort to overturn a call made on the court.

Also we ask that since the commissioners/staff are monitoring the playing time of each child, teams should expect to provide an official score keeper, and scoreboard operator. They can be an assistant coach, a parent, or if these people are already provided in each gym then that works great too. This, once again, is very much appreciated and makes jobs a lot easier for everyone.

Basketball Playoffs

The Playoff Brackets for 6th-8th grade CYO Basketball will be posted by tomorrow at noon at the latest (earlier if we can). We will provide you the link both on the Blog and the Website, but it won't be posted through our E-Scheduler, so please check the Blog and the Website for the brackets.

We will be putting the brackets together tonight, which means you have until 5:00pm to give us any missing scores. Please check! We would hate to see a win taken away because we simply never knew about it.

Second VB Coaches Meeting Rescheduling

As many of you probably noticed, the second volleyball coaches meeting was scheduled for Ash Wednesday. We are in the process of moving this, as to not conflict with anyone's mass schedule that evening. We are still planning on having a second meeting available for coaches who are unable to attend the first one on February 9th, but will finalize that early next week.

There will be Play Like A Champion Today trainings offered after both coaches meetings, and this will be the last opportunity to take the training prior to the start of volleyball season.

It is not mandatory that you attend both volleyball coaches meetings, each team in the program must simply have a coach representative attend one of the two meetings. Both meetings should cover the same information, and will show the new Lystedt Law video at both. This video is required by state law for all youth sport coaches. Any team not represented at the coaches meeting will have to suspend their head coach for one game, and in addition recieve a one game forfeit if in 6th-8th grades.

Basketball Score Reporting Reminder

As we approach the last weekend of the regular season for CYO 4th-8th grade Basketball, we would like to kindly remind the 6th-8th grade coaches to please submit all the scores from your games to cyoscores@seattlearch.org or by calling 206-654-4643.

When we make playoff brackets, we never assume that a team won or lost a game, so any unreported scores will go in the standings as a "loss" for both teams. This means that a team listed as 3-1 (with 3 game scores unreported) will be assumed to have gone 3-4 and will be seeded behind a team listed at 4-3 (with all of their scores reported), for example.

1st PARENT LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY - ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI HOSTS

A sincere thank you to the parish/school community of St. Francis of Assisi for hosting our first Parent Like A Champion training last night from 7-8:30pm. Kati Skeltis, Athletic Director, did a lot of the work preparing the community for the evening. The session was strategically timed during the junior high youth ministry time at the parish so it encouraged families to drop their youth off and come over. A strong turnout of over 30 parents and grandparents were treated to great hospitality by the welcoming crew at the door and the food and beverages catered by Mick Kelly's Irish Pub were enjoyed throughout the evening.

The training, led by CYO Athletics Staff Scott Bailey, Ross Brownell, Clint Richardson and Tauno Latvala with additional support by St. Francis AD Kati Skeltis was well received by the group. A good conversation was had during the training and afterwards in some Q&A time between the trainers and participants. We are pleased that the training was found to be so worthwhile for the group.

For more information on the Parent Like A Champion program please go to the website at the University of Notre Dame. If you would like to schedule a parent training for your school parent association/club or family ministry program, please contact Scott Bailey at scott.bailey@seattlearch.org.
